I pretty much bought mine as soon as they were available. I had previously owned the OLP Petrucci model, and, while I did like that guitar, when I received my JP50...it completely surpassed my expectations. From everything to its looks, sound, feel, and the case it comes in, I was very, very pleased. I'm aware that a few of you here have the OLP Petrucci, and have customized it. I pretty much did the same to mine, but in the JP50's case...I don't even think it needs it.
Now, one thing that amazes me is how well this thing stays in tune. I'm not exaggerating when I say it *rarely* goes out of tune. And when it does, it's minimal. When I got the JP50 and saw that the bridge it had was very similar to a Stratocaster bridge (not the vintage kind, but the new "floating" kind) I was kinda bummed out. When I plugged in, however, I played it for about 5 hours straight and purposefully did a lot of whammy abuse, and WOW...it didn't even go out of tune!
I LOVE the neck on this thing! I also own a EBMM JP6, and I dare say...they feel the same! With the OLP Petrucci, I could feel a vast difference in playability and feel...this is not the case when comparing the JP50 and my EBMM JP6. In fact, my JP6 is an older model; no piezo, no matching headstock, and only one tone knob. That is, in a nutshell, the JP50 setup. I almost prefer playing the JP50! As far as the action goes, it came just the way I like it. In fact, after playing the JP50 for several weeks, I actually adjusted the JP6 action so that it would be like the JP50!
While the JP50 does sound great (in my opinion), this is where I can tell a difference between it and the EBMM JP6. It's ever so slight, however. I *may* be putting in the LiquiFire and Crunch Lab in it. I haven't really decided yet though, because it sounds great through my rig as is. From everything to clean tones to crunch, and soaring leads! If I do end up putting in the new Petrucci signature pickups, I would like to also go ahead and replace the tone knob with a push-pull one. One thing I did do was order the EBMM bullet knobs, because I actually don't like the knobs that came on it. I don't know, but they don't seem to "fit in" with the rest of the guitar's looks
I love the locking tuners, love the bridge, and haven't had input jack problems, as I did with the OLP Petrucci. I will be replacing the toggle switch, because it's plastic. I'm just going to put in something...a little more "heavy duty" I guess! Other than that, this guitar is perfect. For the price, I dare say I don't think there is a better guitar out there. I know it's a bold statement, but I did my homework as far as trying out a number of different guitars in that price range. I had tried the PRS SE series, and most of them, while they felt good, they had tuning issues. Ultimately, I went for what would need the least amount of customizing. In the JP50's case, close to none. I couldn't be happier with this guitar.
If you are considering buying one of these, you won't regret it! I mean, if money is an issue, and you can't afford the EBMM JP at this time, then try it out! You will truly be shocked at how similar it is, and how it compares. I can't say enough positive things about this guitar. Keep in mind that I'm not just praising it in ignorance; also in my collection is a Ball Family Reserve Petrucci 7, and a Stealth JP 6. As an owner of both, rest assured that the JP50 is quality!
